Home - 8-12 years - Diarrhoea

Nona is furious. Paula and Jep have spent all day racing, and she has not been told to play with them.

Nona did not know that Paula and Jep run because they have diarrhoea. No matter if they are doing an exam or drawing. Suddenly they notice a twinge in their belly and they go like lightning to the toilet. If they get distracted, it can be catastrophic.

Get ready because we are going to talk about poop. And best of all is that the grownups have challenged us to do it ;-)

What is diarrhoea?

A person like Paula and Jep has diarrhoea when he/she has to poop very often, also, it comes out very liquid.

Diarrhoea can be classified as:

acute when it lasts less than two weeks,

prolonged when it lasts from two to four weeks,

chronic when lasting more than four weeks.

Usually, the bowel movement usually lasts between three and seven days if you do drink plenty of fluids and rest.

The very young babies can reach to poop a lot of times a day. In their case, they are not considered to have diarrhoea like Paula and Jep.

Diarrhoea has friends?

Besides appearing in a sudden way, diarrhoea can be accompanied by a few very annoying friends:

abdominal pain (pain in the belly area),

feeling sick (nausea),

or loss of appetite.

By spending so much time in the bathroom, Paula and Jep have become intimate friends. "If Jep knew it was Paula who punctured the ball ..." Nona thinks.

Why do we get diarrhoea?

We get diarrhoea because the intestines, very long tubes located in the stomach, swell. There is more liquid inside and it can’t be absorbed. The cause is the repeated infections caused by a type of microorganisms. They are creatures that can only be seen by a microscope.

In the case of children such troubling microorganisms vary by country, season of year and age. The microorganism that affects Catalan children has more affect in winter and in children less than three years old.

Paula and Jep named the organism that has united them. We prefer not to write it because we are embarrassed.

What can we do when we have diarrhoea?

The diarrhoea ends up disappearing, just like it came, spontaneously. Sometimes, there are medicines that can make it go a little faster.

Most importantly, when you have the runs, you have to drink lots of water. In the pharmacy you can find some ready serum to help restore fluids and minerals that the body loses when going to the toilet.

Paula has invited Jep to a glass of water. Hydrate together is better than doing it alone. However, each one with his own glass.

Do we have to do a Diet?

There is no food that stops diarrhoea. However, there are some that are stringent such as potatoes, rice, carrots and bananas. Certainly, that can help us to avoid having to go to the bathroom so often. Of course, you should not eat them for many days. We could have a stopper!

If there is no vomiting and you are hungry, you can eat almost everything. It is advisable to avoid foods and drinks that have a lot of sugar (juice, soda, candy ...) or have a lot of fat (industrial pastries, some meat ...).

Often, when you have diarrhoea, you lose your appetite. Because it is important to eat, for a few days, you can eat small meals and things you like. Pooping is not a perfect excuse to eat everyday macaroni and ice-cream.

Today, Paula and Jep diet eat at school. I wish Nona could also do that, she cannot bear the peas on the menu today.

Is diarrhoea contagious?

Diarrhoea can be passed from one person to another. For this reason, it is very important to wash your hands frequently whether you are the patient or you are close to someone who is.

Paula and Jep are very happy. They no longer have the runs. Now, who will spend a lot of time in the toilet is Nona. If you see her running down the hall, move aside, she has an emergency.
